Step by Step Guide: How to install RHEL 10 on VMWare Workstation

Red Hat is one of the most powerful Linux distributions available for physical, cloud, and virtual platforms. It is widely used and trusted enterprise operating system in the world. Most of the organizations and IT professionals use RHEL OS for its stability, security, long-term support, and high features for servers, data centres, and cloud environments.

In RHEL 10, Red Hat has introduced modern hardware support, performance optimization, seamless cloud integration, an improved web console for easier administration.

If you are a student, new to Linux, or trying out or exploring new features in RHEL 10, it may not be safe to install RHEL 10 operating system directly on your computer/laptop. Hence, we recommend you install RHEL 10 operating system on VMware Workstation. VMware Workstation allow you to create a virtual machine (VM) in a secure and isolated environment inside your system where you can install RHEL 10 operating system without affecting your main operating system.

Prerequisites:

        1.       System Requirements:

          CPU - 64-bit x86 or ARM system

           Memory- 4 GB Minimum

           Disk – 20 GB Minimum

2.       VMWare Workstation

3.       Enable Virtualization in BIOS (VT-x/AMD-V)

4.       RHEL 10 iso image

In this post I will guide you step by step about the entire installation process of RHEL 10 on VMware Workstation. let’s start

Step 1: Download the RHEL 10 iso image

Download the ISO image from Red Hat's official website. If you don't know how to download the ISO image from Red Hat's official site, visit the link below:

Step 2: Create a New Virtual Machine in VMware Workstation:

Open the VMware Workstation application and click on create a new virtual machine option; PFB screenshot:

Configuration Wizard: Select Configuration Wizard either Typical or Custom. I recommended select custom one to step up all the configuration by manual and click Next.  If you are okay with default configurations then go ahead with Typical configurations.

 By default, fetch Virtual Machine Hardware compatibility simply click next:

 Mount ISO: Select the "installer disc image file(iso) and Browse for the RHEL 10 ISO file path where you downloaded earlier and click Next.

Guest Operating system: Select the Guest Operating system Linux and choose version Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 64-bit (if RHEL 10 option is not available), click Next:

VM Name & Location: Select the name of the Virtual Machine Name (for example: RHEL 10.0) and location where you want to save VM configuration files then click Next:

Processor configuration: select the processor configuration how many processors you want to assign on this VM configuration and click Next:

Memory Configuration: Select the memory size to be allocated to the VM and click Next:

Note: RHEL 10 requires a minimum of 4 GB to install successfully in Graphical Mode.

 Network Configuration: select the Network Connection as per your requirements and click Next:

I/O Controller: select the Recommended I/O controller and click Next:

 Disk Type: Select the disk type and click Next:

Select Disk: Select the create new virtual disk option and click Next

Disk Capacity: Add the disk capacity as per your requirements then select the store virtual disk as a single file and click Next. This option will improve the disk performance.

If you want to save disk file on specific folder than browse and change the path, otherwise click Next:

 

Review your configuration settings: To modify any parameters, select 'Customize Hardware'. If no changes are required, click 'Finish' to proceed with creating the virtual machine.

Step 3: Start Virtual Machine to begin the installation

Now click on “Power on This Virtual machine” button to start the installation:

Step 4: Select the RHEL 10 boot menu:

Automatically your system boots from the ISO, select Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10.0 and press enter.

Note: If you do not choose any option after 60 seconds automatically choose option Test media & install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10.0 and start installation:

Step 5: Select the Language:

Select your preferred language and click continue button:

 Step 6: Configure the other required installation settings:

Based on your selected language, the keyboard, language support, and time & date settings have been automatically configured.

If you would like to make changes, simply click on the relevant option. Otherwise, you can proceed without making any adjustments.A screenshot of a computer

 Step 7: Software Selection:

Now select the software selection option to select the specific software during the installation otherwise go with the default one (Server With GUI) and click Done.

 Step 8: Selection of Installation Destination

Now select the Storage Configuration Method; I recommended to choose Automatic option to configure partition automatically if your beginner in Linux and click done.

After clicking the Done button, Installation Destination will show “Automatic partition selected” if you choose Automatic option.

 If you choose custom option and click done button, new window will open as per shown in below screenshot:

Now click on “+” to create manual partition, these are the mandate partition you need to create if you choose manual partition:

/boot – Boot partition – In this partition operating system's bootloader (like GRUB), the kernel, and the initial RAM disk (initrd).

/boot/efi – UEFI-based systems that stores bootloaders, drivers, and other files needed to start operating systems {if your system supported UEFI otherwise not required)

 / - root partition – Where OS will install and which can hold an entire filesystem.

/home – In /home directory user will save data, personal files, and configurations, separate from the operating system files.

Swap – Swap partition for virtual Memory.

Let’s create above partition one by one:

Drop down the mount point and seclect /boot and mention capacity, then click on Add mount point button {1 GB is sufficient for /boot partition}

Same as that you can create other partition after creating all partition will show as per below screenshot and click done button

Once you click the done button click the accept change button to format the partition

 After clicking the Accept Changes button, Installation Destination will show “Custom partition selected”.

Step 8: Selection of Root Account

Enable the root account and set a secure password. Next, enable the option “Allow root SSH login with password” to permit remote access and click Done

 Step 9: Selection of User Creation

Now create the new user and mentioned the user details with password, then click done button

Note: If you don’t want to provide administrative privileges to this user account uncheck the option 

 Step 10: Begin Installation

Now click the begin installation button after completing all required setting

 

Step 11: Installation process of RHEL 10 is in progress

RHEL 10 installation is now underway. Depending on your system configuration, this process may take from 15 to 60 minutes. Please be patient and wait until the setup is complete.

 

 Step 12: Reboot

OS installation is completed so now select reboot the system button to reboot the VM.

Step 13: GUI Login screen

After rebooting, you will get the GUI login screen. Login with user credentials which you created during the installation time.

Note: If you want to login using Root credentials click on Not listed?


Step 14: First Boot

Once you login with user credentials you will get Welcome tour window. If you want to take tour, then click otherwise click on skip button.

Step 15: Installation Complete
After skipping the introductory tour, and your RHEL 10 operating system is now ready to use.
